Finding used knitting needles

As discussed in my last post, the very beginners pre-knitting guide, finding used knitting needles is not only an option for a beginner but a budget friendly and ecological option for the everyone! Online marketplaces like eBay, Postmark, Facebook Marketplace and Etsy can be a great resource with many different options, depending on what you’re looking for.

One of the perks of eBay and Poshmark is that you have a little wiggle room to bargain, where as the price on Etsy is generally set. Sometimes people ask full price for items that are used, which honestly I just can’t understand and certainly won’t pay, but that’s up to you. Be mindful of the fact that you may not be able to return them unless there is a flaw that was not listed, but you can always resell on these sites as well. On Etsy and eBay I will set my preferences to “USA” and/or type in used. I find that if I don’t do this a lot of options pop up that are actually just new and being shipped internationally, and honestly just not good quality. You can also set pick up areas if you’re looking for something local.

Additionally, websites such as Ravelry have dedicated forums and groups where fellow knitters often sell or trade their gently used needles. When using this is go into “community” at the top of the page, and then “forums”. I will then search “needles for sale”. You will get a few off topic posts, but overall it’s easy to scroll through. I love that you're supporting your fellow knitting community here as well. It’s also a great tool for when you're jonesing to switch things up, you can sell your items here as well. Some people post via amazon, or other methods but it’s a good starting point.

And of course, thrift stores and yard sales can also be treasure troves for finding knitting supplies, including needles. Don't forget to check with local knitting or crafting groups to see if they have any upcoming swaps or sales events where you can find quality second-hand needles. Other places like local churches and libraries will also having knitting groups and you can pop in to see what they have and maybe stay for a knitting class and make a few friends.

Lastly, while you’re going to find new needles and local yarn stores, think mom and pop, they will also have knitting circles and groups. They may even have events for swaps and sales, so don’t discount these either. It’s always good to support your local businesses. And if you are in the market for something new, when you go to

Happy needle hunting!
